Over the past decade Jonkers has formed an international reputation for handling exceptional copies of fine and rare books predominantly in the fields of modern first editions, fine illustrated books, classic children’s fiction and nineteenth century literature. They take great care in their selection of books, and insist on only handling those items in the finest condition or with significant literary association. They are equally able to build entire libraries, add the final books to a collection or simply find the perfect gift for a special occasion.

Location

The grade II listed Tudor building, one of the oldest in Henley, that houses their showroom, is situated on the main street of the town. Close by is the stretch of river that plays host to the famous Henley Regatta, which has been a highlight of the social season from its inception in 1839, and to this day, attracts oarsmen from all round the world.

History

Jonkers was founded in 1991 by Christiaan Jonkers, and specialized in the first editions of twentieth century literature. The company grew rapidly and in 1998 merged with Sam Jonkers' (then Johnstone) Bromlea Books, which was based in the north of England and specialized in childrens' and illustrated books. The Henley showroom was opened in late 1998 and the scope was extended to include nineteenth century literature, literary sets and fine bindings, as well as Thames topography and important general books.

Throughout, Jonkers' principle has been simple: to handle only the very best copies available in each field. Before any book goes on sale it is meticulously checked for any defects and collated to ensure every plate is present and perfect. It is then carefully researched to take into consideration its rarity, condition and historical importance. With this information it is priced and catalogued to note all the elements of the collation and research. All books are unconditionally guaranteed to be authentic and as described.

Services

Jonkers issue regular catalogues containing recently acquired fine books. Each item is described in detail both for physical appearance and condition. They also detail the scarcity and literary and historical importance of the book. All items purchased from their catalogues carry an unqualified guarantee of authenticity and customer satisfaction. Jonkers attend many major auctions throughout the world, and are happy to act on a client’s behalf. In doing this they undertake to inspect, authenticate and evaluate the items, as well as bidding and delivering for the client. Jonkers also supply advice and information on the various aspects of book collecting. Written valuations can also be undertaken for insurance or probate or simply for personal interest. They can value a single book or a whole library, and each book can be given a written catalogue description if required.
